Sarvodaya Deaf-Dumb Residential School, managed by Sarvodaya Mahila and Gramina Abhivruddi Samsthe® in Jamakhandi, Bagalkot, Karnataka, is a dedicated institution that stands as a beacon of opportunity for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Our mission is to create an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment where these children can receive specialized education, learn life skills, and build confidence for independent living.
Sarvodaya School is a residential special education institution dedicated to serving the unique educational needs of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Our school provides specialized programs and support systems that enhance communication, develop social skills, and promote academic growth, all within an environment thoughtfully tailored to their specific requirements.
At Sarvodaya, we believe education is a powerful process that nurtures, strengthens, and guides every mental and physical faculty, preparing individuals to fully participate in life. For deaf children, whose intellectual development faces unique challenges due to the absence of hearing, education must also awaken abilities that might otherwise remain dormant. We reject outdated labels like “deaf and dumb,” which wrongly imply defects in both hearing and intelligence. Being unable to hear often means a child cannot naturally learn to speak—not because they lack the capacity, but simply because they cannot imitate sounds they have never heard. That is why we focus on sign language, speech training, and other supportive methods to unlock each child’s potential. Today, our institution proudly calls itself a “School for the Deaf,” emphasizing learning and empowerment, not charity or pity. We stand with the growing global movement that views deaf education as a specialized branch of teaching—not as an asylum or a place for the unfortunate, but as a vibrant space where children are equipped to live with dignity, equality, and respect. Through this vision, we aim to build a world where deaf individuals are recognized not by their limitations, but by their abilities, talents, and rightful place in society.
We adopt a combination of proven methodologies to ensure every child receives education tailored to their needs:he right environment for growing empowers deaf and dumb students to communicate, learn, and thrive with confidence, dignity, and a true sense of belonging.
We use signs, the manual alphabet, and writing as primary tools to foster mental development and enhance comprehension and use of written language.
This method emphasizes the manual alphabet and writing to develop language skills, supplemented with speech and speech-reading where appropriate.
Focused on speech and speech-reading alongside writing, this approach aims to develop students’ spoken language abilities, mental faculties, and literacy.
For semi-deaf students, we maximize the use of residual hearing, with or without assistive devices, to educate them primarily through speech and hearing, preparing them to integrate as hard-of-hearing speaking individuals.
Recognizing that each child is unique, we customize teaching — blending manual, oral, and auricular methods as best suited to each student. Speech and speech-reading are emphasized where likely to succeed, always prioritizing mental development and language acquisition.

“Before coming to Sarvodaya, my daughter struggled to express even simple thoughts. Now she signs beautifully, smiles more, and dreams of becoming a teacher. This school has given her a voice.”
